Action After Buffalo

5/22/2022

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Today, in the sermon, I mentioned some of the isolation that happens in lower-income and Communities of Color and mentioned some of the ways to support the community in Buffalo and Gaithersburg/Montgomery County. I wanted to send those out for anyone who is interested in donating, or learning a little more. As always, if you have questions or other resources to share, feel free to reach out.

First, here are a couple ways that people are helping the Buffalo community affected by the shooting.

- Feed Buffalo (Provides healthy and fresh food in East Buffalo)
- Rooted in Love Incorporated (Provides hygiene products and fresh food in Western NY, based in Buffalo)
- Tops Buffalo Survivor Fund

Second, here are a couple fresh food providers in our community
- Manna Food Center (where we have donated fresh food before)
Gaithersburg Pantry

I was reminded that some people might not know what a “food desert” is; and while there’s way too much to cover in an email. Here are two introductory articles. One is the Britannica definition here and the other is an AP Article detailing how the closure of the Tops Super Market affects the community here (I chose the AP as a facts-first, unbiased source of news; you could find many articles on the food insecurity in East Buffalo - especially after the closure of Tops.)

Finally, I mentioned the Poor People’s Campaign March on June 14th in DC. If you are interested in this event, the Baltimore-Washington write up is here with a sign up being sent out this week.

Surely there are plenty of other ways to seek healing in wholeness in our world. And please don’t hesitate to share other ways we can support healing and wholeness in our community and the world.

Blessings to you all!

Pastor Will Newton
